With the advent of digital technology came the digital watch and not too much later came the compass watch, then the altimeter watch. Finally an enterprising company decided to put the three functions together: watch altimeter compass and began producing the compass altimeter watch. The combination watch altimeter compass is the most popular chosen today.
You don't have to be an outdoor type to enjoy such a watch. They look really cool and in addition to the great looks have lots and lots of functions and features.
Most manufacturers offer pretty much the same warrant so for most people it boils down to looks and a preference for a certain brand over another.
Take your time when looking for a compass altimeter watch. Some are quite a bit larger than other. Some offer ally types of additional features. Today you can even get a GPS device in a digital watch too.
If you are buying a compass altimeter watch or the watch altimeter compass device to depend on for outdoor camping or hiking then you should also know how to find your directions should the watch become damaged or lost.
Learn to do things the old fashioned way then you can buy a digital altimeter watch for convenience.
For example you should know how to find directions without depending on anything electronic. There are numerous methods for finding basic directions using things that are commonly available.
My favorite way of finding North, South, East and West is using the shadows made by the Sun. It's pretty simple and uses the changing length of a shadow to show you some basic directions. Do the following and you can get some basic sense of direction.
These steps should be performed on level ground. It will not be as accurate on hillsides or slopes.
Find a straight stick about 3 feet long. A fishing pole or vehicle antenna will work too. Push it into the ground making sure it is fairly straight. At the end of the shadow cast by the antenna, pole, stick or whatever you are using, place something small like a rock, coin, etc.
Wait a half hour or so and then place another rock, coin, etc. at the end of the shadow.
The line between the two items is your East-West reference with the first item as West and the second item as East. North and South are at right angles to the line and if you place the Sun at your back then 90 degrees from the line away from the Sun is North.
Basic stuff, pretty simple. Do not depend on anything electronic or breakable for your safety. You should always have a back-up plan that can be implemented with simple easily obtainable items.
That being said, a watch altimeter compass combination might just make it a lot easier to find your way around.
